The board members of Bliss Ltd, at a meeting held last week, were shocked to hear the Director of Finance comment that she did not understand why management continuously spends thousands of Ghana cedis in organizing monthly staff retreats with its attendant loss of man hours, all in the name of what they call “worker motivation.”

As a Management Professional on the board, you have decided to educate the Director of Finance and other like-minded Managers of the company on the need to have a motivated group of employees.

Required:
a) Explain to the Director of Finance FIVE (5) benefits of a well-motivated workforce to a business organization. (15 marks)
b) Identify and explain TWO (2) basic schools of thought in Leadership. (5 marks)

a) Benefits of a Well-Motivated Workforce:

  1. Increased Productivity:
When employees are motivated, the amount produced per worker is likely to be high. This results in lower unit costs of production, enabling the firm to sell its products at a competitive price, leading to higher turnover and profits.
  2. Lower Staff Turnover:
A motivated workforce tends to have lower levels of staff turnover. When employees are satisfied and motivated, they are more likely to stay with the organization, reducing recruitment and training costs.
  3. Reduced Absenteeism:
Absenteeism among employees is likely to decrease when they are well-motivated, as they feel content with their jobs and working conditions. This leads to more consistent productivity and reduces the disruption caused by frequent absences.
  4. Enhanced Company Reputation:
Motivated and contented employees are likely to give the organization a good reputation as an employer, making it easier to recruit and retain the best talent when necessary.
  5. Improved Industrial Relations:
A well-motivated workforce typically fosters better relationships between employees and management, leading to a harmonious work environment. This reduces the likelihood of industrial disputes and contributes to a positive organizational culture.
  6. Higher Quality of Products or Services:
Motivated employees are more likely to put in extra effort to ensure the quality of the company’s products or services is high, which can enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.
(Any five points @ 3 marks each = 15 marks)

b) Basic Schools of Thought in Leadership:

  1. Style Theory of Leadership:
The philosophy underlying this leadership theory is that a successful leader adopts a particular management style irrespective of the circumstances. The leader may be task-oriented, focusing on getting the job done, or people-oriented, emphasizing the welfare of employees.
  2. Trait Theory of Leadership:
This theory suggests that successful leaders possess certain inherent traits or characteristics, such as integrity, objectivity, ambition, and fairness. It argues that leaders are born with these qualities rather than made through experience or training.
  3. Contingency Theory of Leadership:
This theory posits that effective leadership depends on a variety of contingent factors, such as the environment, the situation, and the needs of the team. There is no one best way of leading; instead, successful leaders adapt their style to the specific circumstances they face.
