a. Concept of Power: Power refers to the ability of an individual or group to influence the behavior, actions, or opinions of others. In the context of leadership, power is the capacity to direct or influence others to achieve organizational goals. Power allows leaders to inspire, motivate, and drive changes within the organization. It can be derived from various sources and used positively to promote creativity and change or negatively to control and dominate others.
b. Five Sources of Power:
- Legitimate Power:
- This type of power comes from an individual’s position or role within an organization. It is the authority that a leader has by virtue of their formal title, such as a CEO or manager.
- Explanation: Legitimate power is based on the hierarchy within the organization and grants leaders the authority to make decisions, delegate tasks, and expect compliance from subordinates.
- Reward Power:
- Reward power arises from the leader’s ability to provide rewards to employees, such as bonuses, promotions, or other benefits.
- Explanation: Leaders with reward power can motivate employees by recognizing and rewarding good performance. This power encourages followers to work towards desired outcomes to receive the rewards.
- Coercive Power:
- Coercive power is the ability to enforce discipline or punish employees for non-compliance or poor performance. It is based on the threat of negative consequences.
- Explanation: Leaders with coercive power can impose penalties such as demotion, dismissal, or salary reduction, which may compel compliance. However, excessive use of this power can lead to a negative organizational culture.
- Expert Power:
- Expert power comes from an individual’s knowledge, skills, and expertise in a specific area. Followers respect and seek advice from those with expert power.
- Explanation: Leaders with expert power are trusted for their knowledge and competence. Their ability to provide valuable insights or solve complex problems earns them influence over others.
- Referent Power:
- Referent power is based on the personal characteristics and charisma of the leader. It stems from the admiration and respect that followers have for the leader.
